Making the Most of Your ASHA Experience

2009_Convention_LogoBelow are tips from our guest writer, RehabCare, about making the most of the ASHA convention on November 19-21, 2009.

The flights have all been booked, hotel reservations made, mardi gras beads and masks have all been packed — you’re ready for your visit to “The Big Easy”…..or are you?  It’s your first national convention and although you’d never admit it, you’re filled with fear and trepidation about what the week is to hold.  Have no fear! RehabCare is  here to help you make the most of your ASHA 2009 experience.  Here are a few tips you may want to remember:

1. Prepare to be Overwhelmed- When you first walk into the exhibit hall it is totally okay to feel slightly overwhelmed at the sight of hundreds of booths teeming with thousands of professionals and students just like yourself.  Just remember that if you have a plan and work through the booths methodically you can stop and see everyone you would like to meet.

2. Know Which Booths You Want to Visit- Whether you have heard great things about a company, you’ve been in communication with someone, or your professor recommends an exhibitor to you, know ahead of time who you want to visit.  Often companies will send you a postcard that is good for some type of giveaway (or an added chance at winning a Dell Mini).  These are good things to keep in a folder and take with you.  And, of course, if you go nowhere else, stop by booth 1315 and get a very cool giveaway and enter to win RehabCare’s Dell Mini!

3. Use the Resources Provided- On their website ASHA offers a very useful tool called “My Planner”.  This program gives you access to search the over 1700 education sessions.  It gives you the ability to organize your selected sessions into one easy-to-read page that shows where you need to be and when you need to be there.  My Planner also lets you add appointments, hotel information, and exhibitors you want to visit.  This tool is very helpful.  I’d highly recommend you utilize it to help you make the most of your experience.

4. Know What You Want to Ask- With graduation nearing your head is full of questions about what comes next.  Have some of these questions ready to ask the companies you meet.  Some questions you may want to ask include, “What kind of benefits do you offer?”, “What locations do you have near me?”, “Does your company offer tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement?”, “Do you provide money to assist with CEU’s?”, and “Do you offer a mentorship program?”.  Knowing in advance the questions you’d like answered will help you direct the conversation in a way that is most useful to you.

I8H4NZ6YY988CJSPYLZUsing these few short tips will help you make the most of your experience at the ASHA convention this year!  Have a great time and remember to come by and see RehabCare at Booth 1315.  We will be giving away a Dell mini.  And don’t forget to enjoy a little Jambalaya and Crawfish Etouffe while you’re in New Orleans!

Communication Job & Internship Fair: During The Fair

You have done your research and ironed your shirt. Now are you wondering what to do during the Communication Job & Internship Fair on Wednesday, October 28? CCS has compiled a three-part series providing advice for before, during, and after the fair. Check out the second post, ‘During the Job & Internship Fair‘ below. If you missed the first post, it can be found here.

  • Survey the room and make a game plan. Use your time wisely so you can visit your priority organizations first. Spend the rest of your time meeting with other recruiters at the event. You may surprise yourself with a new interest in an organization you had not considered earlier.

  • Anticipate speaking with each recruiter for about five minutes. You want to be respectful of the recruiter’s time, as well as the other students waiting to speak to the recruiters. Approach each recruiter confidently, shake his or her hand, introduce yourself with your first and last name, give your elevator speech, ask your prepared questions, answer any questions asked by the recruiter, ask for a business card, say thank you for your time, and then move along to the next booth. Your interaction should be professional, focused, and brief.

  • Do a little eavesdropping. Listen to the questions from students in front of you when waiting to speak with a recruiter. This way you avoid asking recruiters to repeat themselves. It may also trigger another question you did not know you had: ‘Could you tell me more about the training program you offer for new hires?’

  • Write down notes after each visit with a recruiter. This will help you organize your thoughts, remember any specific application instructions, and add personalization to your thank-you notes.Job & Internship Fair - Fall 2009 - Media Wall

Communication Job & Internship Fair: Before The Fair

Are you wondering how to prepare for the Communication Job & Internship Fair before Wednesday, October 28? CCS has compiled a three-part series providing advice for before, during, and after the fair. Check out the first post, ‘Before the Job & Internship Fair‘:CCS Job & Internship Fair Poster

  • Practice your “elevator speech” out loud. An “elevator speech” is the quick summation of who you are and what you can offer. It is a good idea to prepare what you would like to share about yourself in a short amount of time, and it is challenging to coherently share your ideas without practicing first. Prepare a 60-second answer to “So, tell me about yourself.”

  • Plan your attire. As a rule of thumb, business attire (i.e. a suit) is appropriate if you are looking for a job. If you are looking for an internship, business causal (i.e. a blouse or dress shirt, slacks, a skirt) is appropriate. If you are unsure, it is best to err on the side of professional. If you would like to ask about specifics CCS is available to help.

  • Research, research, research. Beyond knowing which companies will attend the event, you should be familiar with what the company does, its culture, if it is currently hiring, etc. This will help you be more prepared for on-the-spot interviews from recruiters at the event. It also gives you background information so you can ask specific questions about the organization.

  • Keep it manageable. You do not need to know the “ins and outs” of every organization at the fair. Spend your time getting to know the organizations that interest you. You should be knowledgeable about those that matter to you.

  • Decide what you are going to bring. Bring multiple copies of your resume. If you have business cards or a portfolio to carry your resumes, bring them as well. It is also important to think about what you do not want to carry – backpacks and gym bags make your overall appearance less professional; leave them at home.
