Summer Journalism Internships in Berlin, Germany

As an undergraduate, I double majored in broacasting/mass media and german at SUNY Oswego (that was way back in the mid 1980s!).  At that time I was frequently asked; “Broadcasting and German?  How are you going to combine those two fields?” Back then , I didn’t have a really good answer, but students today do:

The  Freie Universität Berlin and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (German Academic Exchange Service) have teamed up to offer an intensive, scholarship-supported summer internship/seminar program in Berlin for American journalism and communication students.

The program consists of two complementary segments. The first six weeks arespent at the International Center for Journalism of the Freie Universität Berlin, where participants will expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany and the country’s current media structure and working conditions of journalists. With these theoretical building blocks in place, participants subsequently embark on an intensive five-week internship with a German newspaper, (online-) magazine, TV or radio station, press or PR agency. During the academic part of the program they will do an one-week educational tour within Germany with young journalists from the Independent States of the former Soviet Union.

The deadline to apply for summer 2010 is January 31, 2010.

More information on this program can be found at the DAAD’s InternXchange.

NYU Law School Offers Public Service Scholarship Program

The Root-Tilden-Kern (RTK) Program is the nation’s premier public service scholarship. The program pays full tuition, without regard to financial need, for three years of law school to outstanding students who are committed to careers in public service. Each year twenty scholars are selected based on three criteria: commitment to public service, academic excellence, and potential for leadership. In addition to full tuition, the RTK program provides special orientation, mentoring, and networking opportunities.

The program defines public service broadly: government policy and legal positions (including judicial clerkships), electoral politics, non‐profit organizations, academia, international law, and public interest law firms. NYU strives to ensure that the RTK scholars are diverse in terms of race, sex, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, geographic origins, and ideology. The program believes that diversity is critical to fostering a strong public interest profession.  To Apply:

 • Submit the J.D. application by January 1, 2010.

• Submit one additional letter of recommendation that addresses your commitment to public service.

• Submit a short public service essay not to exceed 750 words. Discuss the factors that have most significantly influenced your public service commitment and goals, or any other aspects you consider relevant to your qualification for the scholarship(s).

• Finalists selected for interviews will be notified by March 15, 2010.

• Interviews will be conducted in late March at NYU and scholarship offers will be made shortly thereafter. The program will pay for transportation and accommodation expenses to the interviews.
